History
Its origins are confused with those of the Maltese because its ancestors are the same small dogs mentioned in Latin by Aristotle (384-322 BC) under the name of “canes melitensis”. Already known in Roman times, the Bolognese appears more among the most appreciated gifts that were made during the entire most powerful period in the world. Cosimo de Medici (1389-1464) brought no less than eight to Brussels as a gift to many Belgian noblemen. Philip II, king of Spain from 1556 to 1598, after having received two as a gift from the Duke of Este, thanked the donor by writing “that these two dogs are the most royal gift that can be given to an emperor”. The Bolognese are represented in paintings by Titian, Pierre Breuchel called the Elder and Goya.
